about

Fundamentally this is a song about an internal conflict of interest and the horrifying revelations that that conflict brings. The birds are heard right before bed following a long period of isolation (spent awake) during the nighttime and then early morning. They are a reminder of the natural world and the way in which humans fit into it, despite what we believe. Reminded of my mortality and my status as a mere animal, the rest of my fears come like a flood. The isolation was intentional, engineered in an attempt to avoid the feelings the birds bring, but it is by virtue of that isolation that I stayed awake long enough to hear them. After digesting my own fears I think about how other people fit into the paradigm of living un-animal-like and just how silly being selfish is in a metaphysical sense. But in a functional way, these self-centered people, blind to the manifest world, have more than a grain of truth to their lifestyle. So finally I acquiesce and decide to keep the anger provoked by such people inside.

lyrics

And suddenly I can't help but hear
the birds and their songs and their cheer
It seems to me they act like a mirror
reflecting at me my deepest fears

of dying too soon, of seeing the moon
fall out of the sky in the blink of an eye
of falling asleep, of being too meek
for my friends back home, the ones I don't know (woah)

And suddenly I can't help but see
all of the people who think they're free
WITH THEIR EYES WIDE SHUT SINGING "ME, ME, ME
THAT'S WHO THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND YOU WILL SEE"

But I can't condone their obsessions with phones,
their skeptical tones, we're just flesh on the bone
but I do admit, there's some truth in it
so I'll watch this planet with my clenched fists (woah)
